L&W’s Wheat-Free Sweet Potato & Flax Dog Treats

I had bought a couple of sweet potatoes, intending to make some sweet potato chews with them, but then I thought I’d rather make some cookies.  After I had no luck finding a wheat-free sweet potato dog treat recipe, I decided to experiment and try to come up with a recipe of my own.  Here it is!

Lu & Wally’s Wheat-Free Sweet Potato & Flax Dog Treats

The ingredients:

The directions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

Microwave sweet potato until soft and mashable.   (About 5 minutes, but maybe more, depending on the size of your potato.)

IMG_2229.JPG

Cut sweet potato in half and scoop 1/2 cup of potato.

IMG_2234.JPG

In a medium bowl, combine sweet potato, egg, flax meal and cinnamon.

IMG_2246.JPG

Stir until well blended and then add the rice flour.

IMG_2248.JPG

Stir until a soft dough forms.

IMG_2249.JPG

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.   With your hands, or a rolling pin, press the dough into a rectangle that is 1/4″ thick.

IMG_2252.JPG

With a pizza cutter or a knife, cut the dough into 1/2″  x 1/2″  squares.  We were able to get 96 squares out of this batch.

IMG_2252.JPG

Transfer the squares to a baking sheet.

IMG_2263.JPG

Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.

Here’s what they end up looking like:

The house smelled SO good after baking these!  They almost smell like pumpkin pie!

The real test – do the dogs like them??

“Me first!”   “No, me first!”

The Verdict? Lu & Wally enthusiastically approved! ;)

If you try them, let me know what your pups think!

I am much too lazy a baker. But I’m definitely going to pass this on to my friend whose golden doodle has allergies. Maybe he’ll share some the next time we visit for a play date.

Pam passed on the recipie for our wheat free, rice free 85lb golden doodle Tashi. We just made them for his 2nd B-day party, so we see if his 4-guests approve. ( he’s been standing by the oven as they bake, so I know HE approves!)

Great job! Don’t you just love creating a new recipe – so much fun! I even add flax seed and/or olive oil to Kirby’s meals. Try it for soft shiny coat and flake free skin.
