Wally graduated from basic obedience class this weekend! He’s come so far in the past 6 weeks. The video sequence below shows him demonstrating all the things he’s learned – “Sit” – “Down” – “Stay” – “Recall” – “Leave it” – and his new trick, “Spin!”
(The videos should play one after the other, so please wait after one ends for the next to begin.)
In Lu’s class, we worked on right-side heel. We call this command “close”, but our trainer calls it “side”. You teach this command the same way you teach the “heel” command. Lu was already familiar with this command because I’ve always walked her on my right side. Since we didn’t have to start from scratch with the command, we worked on refining her positioning.
We walked back and forth across the training center and practiced our commands at random. We practiced our distance down, wait in motion, down on recall, heel in motion and right-side heel in motion.
Lu graduates from class next week. I have to teach her a new trick for graduation. I have NO idea what to teach her! She knows so many tricks already, it’s hard to come up with something new.
I thought that maybe I could teach her to balance a treat on her nose, but I’ve tried to teach that before and it was a complete flop. I think her nose is just too short. She acts as if I’m trying to put something in her eye! It actually scares her.
I also thought that maybe I could teach her to distinguish between 3 different objects and pick the right one when I say the word. I’m not sure if this would be tough or easy.. I might give this one a shot.
Anyone have any other suggestions? What tricks does your dog know? It can’t be too crazy, because I only have a few days to teach it. I know someone out there has a great idea for me! :)
