Sweet Potato Chews
I finally got around to making those sweet potato chews I was talking about in a previous post. Did you know that The Center for Science in the Public Interest ranked the sweet potato as the number one vegetable when it comes to nutrition? They’re chock full of complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. They’re a great alternative to rawhide, full of fiber and highly digestible. Plus, my dogs really like them! :)
A recipe from Dog Treat Kitchen explains how to do this in the oven, but I used my trusty ol’ dehydrator. I cut a giant sweet potato into 1/4″ thick slices, placed the slices in the dehydrator and set it at 125 degrees. I let them dehydrate overnight (about 12 hours).
If you’re not sure about how thick to cut them, I would suggest you err on the thick side. The thicker they are, the chewier. If your dog prefers a crispier treat, cut thinner slices or cook the thicker slices for a longer period of time.
Here’s what ours looked like when they came out of the dehydrator:
The dogs REALLY loved them!

It’s another Saturday Pet Blogger Hop, brought to you by Life with Dogs, Two Little Cavaliers and Confessions of the Plume! Leave us a comment to let us know you dropped by, then hop on over to one of these other fine blogs! :)

I made sundried tomatoes on the dashboard of my car last summer. (I hate buying new kitchen equipment and didn’t want to heat up my oven.)
I wonder if sweet potatoes would work the same way?
These looked yummy by the way. I guess I’ll have to try it.
Great idea, I’ll have to try that.
Very good post! Good nutrition info and great pics! Kirby wants one!

Mama makes these all the time and you are right, they are GREAT! Our recip has an extra step in it, where Mama poaches the sweet potatoes in low fat low sodium chicken stock for a little extra zing, but we’re gonna try it your way today and see how it goes! Thanks for sharing!!
Perfect timing! I was just looking around online for a recipe for sweet potato chews. Thanks! :)
Yum! Gus eats sweet potatoes often and I think he’d like them as a chewy snack.
Happy Saturday!
Hi Miss Lulu and Mr. Wally! We came over from the Dogtipper Blog Hop, it’s nice to meet you! We love sweet potato chewies, but last time my mom made them too small. We haven’t had them in awhile, so Mom says she has been “en-spyrd” by your postie to make some more (bigger ones!) for us!
Barks & Wiggles,
Jackie
Let us know how it goes! They’re really yummy! And good for you, too! :)
I am going to try the sweet potato chews! I’ve made chicken jerky in the dehydrator for Bayleigh, Willie and Lulu and they LOVED it!
Thanks for posting this healthy dog treat recipe! I hadn’t thought of sweet potatoes, though we’ve convinced our dogs that raw carrots are a treat! I’ll have to try this, too.
